There are so many great things to say about Cathy Craig and Academy Fitness Boot Camps that it all can't be said in one short testimonial. Before I begin, I should clarify, I HATE EXERCISING! Just hate it. I've joined gyms in the past and do the classes and other equipment only to quit after a while out of boredom or lack of interest and what difference did it make, no one knew if I was going or not. But at AFBC it's a whole other story. The routines are a little bit different each time...and they're fun (ok, so I still hate exercising but at least I do love coming to AFBC)!!! I know you’re all wondering what my story is. Well here it goes. I grew up in a big Italian family - fried bacon and eggs for breakfast, meatball sandwiches for lunch and for dinner: Pasta! Pasta! Pasta!
I'm the oldest of 3; my sister was skinny and I was chubby. I was always compared to my sister and it really hurt. Sometimes I would lie in bed wishing my fat would go away and I was only about 10 pounds heavier then my sister.
At 18 I got my first job in the fitness industry. I worked at Family Fitness Center creating programs for new members and teaching them how to use the machines. I really loved it and I realized that personal training was my passion.
I'm a mother of 5 children and with each pregnancy came 60 pounds! I really never knew how much your body can hurt when you’re 60 pounds over-weight. I remember taking diet pills or doing that crazy 3 day cabbage diet. Oh yeah, I tried it, I did it all. Did it work? NO!! I knew what I needed to do: Eat Right and Exercise! Quick fixes do not work!

Let me explain the vicious cycle…
Let's think back for a moment. What was the weight loss industry telling us to do back in the 80's? That's right-- telling us to completely cut out the fat. So in turn everyone's kitchen turned into a collection of Snackwell Cookies and Fat Free Ice Cream.
What people didn't realize is that they merely cut out the fat, replaced it with sugars and other additives (sugar just happens to be fat free) and everyone got FATTER!
Now let's move forward to the 90's. The industry was now telling us that carbohydrates were evil and to cut them out at all costs. Suddenly bacon cheeseburgers without the bun and butter and cheese-filled omelettes were the new sliced bread! People were inevitable coming off of this new lo-carb craze because they couldn't sustain it long-term and getting FATTER than ever--not to mention what it did to their already slow metabolisms!
So while you’re eating “low fat” and "low carb" you’re actually eating more sugar, preservatives, and saturated fat than ever before.
Of course your body acts like the captain of a ship that wants things to run efficiently and smoothly and converts almost all of those processed sugars into stored body fat. See, it’s simple really. Your body will either use food as energy (if you’re active) or convert and store it as potential energy – FAT.
Where does all of that fat settle you ask? Right in the waist of the jeans that all of a sudden won't button or that belt that mysteriously needs to be loosened a notch. All of the sudden your skinny jeans begin to feel a little tighter than before. You can’t figure out why, after all you’re eating “healthy,” right?
Now you’re frustrated, and the yo-yo dieting begins.
But they continue to lie…
Now they tell you to slash calories altogether--- that too many calories will make you fat. Then all of a sudden your mood elevates from normal to INSANE, your stomach is grumbling so loudly that you could use it as an alarm clock, and you suddenly feel like reaching for anything in sight to stop the misery- burgers, chocolate, pizzas, you name it-- anything and any amount will do. But your body, always the efficient and orderly captain of the ship, continues to do its best to balance things out.
Here’s what happens next.
First you lose a few pounds… then your body catches on and plunges into starvation mode (this is bad, very bad). In a nut shell, your metabolism slows to a crawl and all progress stops.
You begin to feel weak, tired, irritable and lack energy. How can you even think about exercising in that state?
You can’t. So you don’t.
And sooner or later you snap, begin to eat whatever you feel like again (and you still don't know how to do it within reason by the way), and your body goes into storage mode.
Guess what happens now?
You get fatter, you feel bloated, and those skinny jeans feel like they’re three sizes too small. You lose all hope as you watch the numbers on the scale go up.
